The region of Aveyron is located in the South of France and is still relatively unknown to tourists. It is a region full of stories and legends.. hills and valleys.. culture and nature.. the landscape that once belonged to the Knights Tempeler and Knights Hospitaller. In this relatively unspoiled region you won't come across large numbers of screaming billboards, tourists or amusement parks. On the contrary, the Aveyron is a quiet region where you can make lovely hiking or cycling tours in a fascinating landscape. A place where you can enjoy a "Pastis" on one of the many cosy terrasses in its small villages and where the local people enjoy themselves by playing the game of Pétanque, or where you can wander around on the many little flee markets or enjoy the beautiful landscape views and authentic villages. The region is named after the river Aveyron, hidden in between hills sides and mountain chains, crossed by steep river valleys, rough and decorated with many forests. The Aveyron is now considered to be the green heart of Southern France, where nature is still unspoiled, swirming with fish and lots of deer. For visitors it is like time has be been standing still.
The region has a tempered climate and heights vary from 145 up to 500 meters. Aveyron can be devided into 3 main areas:
- The Northern Lot Valley (dominated by limestone rocks with spectacular views)
- The Southern Aveyron valleys and cracks. (with steep, foresty and unspoiled hillsides)
- The Causses (dry and rocky slate plateaus)
